Track AI Referral Traffic in GA4 (and Why Some Hides)

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants send visitors from recognizable domains such as chatgpt.com, claude.ai, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, but only when a referrer is passed.
  • A custom channel group in GA4 collects them in one place, retroactively.
  • Many visits arrive with no referrer and are counted as Direct. Treat your number as a floor.
  • Clicks from Google AI Overviews are counted as ordinary Search traffic, so check Search Console for them.

Which domains do AI assistants send?

AssistantReferrer domainsHow reliably it passes a referrer
ChatGPTchatgpt.com, legacy chat.openai.comOften on desktop web; mobile apps almost never
Claudeclaude.aiRarely
Perplexityperplexity.ai, www.perplexity.aiMost reliably
Geminigemini.google.com, legacy bard.google.comSometimes
Copilotcopilot.microsoft.comYes

That table comes from a practitioner guide (see Sources), not from the vendors. Treat it as a field observation and verify with your own clicks.

How do I build the channel group?

  1. In GA4, go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups.
  2. Create a new channel group.
  3. Add a condition matching Source against a regex such as:
^(claude\.ai|perplexity\.ai|www\.perplexity\.ai|chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com)$
  1. Put this rule above Referral. Rules are evaluated top-down and the first match wins.
  2. Save. Custom channel groups apply to historical data.

Don't match google.com: you would pull all organic search into the AI channel. Standard properties allow two custom groups.

A separate source reports that GA4 has had a built-in "AI Assistant" channel since 13 May 2026. If you see it in your property, compare it with your custom group before relying on either.

How do I verify it works?

  1. Open DebugView.
  2. Click a real citation from each assistant to your site.
  3. Check the source on session_start.
  4. Look in Traffic acquisition, using Session source / medium (not "First user"), and search for the domain.

Why does so much show up as Direct?

GA4 labels a visit Direct when it has no usable source. Native mobile apps send no referrer, and a lot of assistant use happens on phones. One analytics vendor's 30-day snapshot found AI Search was 0.7% of recorded sessions, and 35.7% of the AI sessions it did recognize had a source tag but no referrer. Those numbers describe one site set, not the web, but they show the shape of the problem.

Reason for hidden trafficWhat you can do
Mobile apps send no referrerNothing in GA4
Link opened from a copied URLNothing
Redirect drops the query stringCheck final URLs
Privacy settings strip referrersNothing

utm_source=chatgpt.com appears on some links ChatGPT generates and can survive when the referrer is stripped. Check the final URL after redirects, because a redirect that drops the query string removes it. Don't add your own UTM tags to inbound AI links; you don't control them.

What about Google AI Overviews?

Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in overall Search traffic and appear in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. In GA4 they look like Organic Search. So the AI channel you build will not include them.

How do I read the result honestly?

Compare three trends over the same period:

Direct shareGA4
Identified AI sessionsGA4 custom channel
Branded impressionsSearch Console

If they rise together, AI discovery may be part of the Direct increase. And ask readers how they found you (a one-line survey or a "how did you hear about us" field).

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover the missing referrers? Not in GA4. Server or CDN logs capture raw referrers, which you can reconcile.

Is a small number bad? No. It is a floor.
